The musty smell in a high-set Queenslander after the first heavy rain of the wet season is a familiar problem across Cairns. That odour often signals more than just dampness, it points to active mould growth, a persistent issue in our region where humidity can linger above 80% for weeks. At Mould Experts Cairns, we move beyond temporary fixes, focusing on diagnosing the specific moisture source, whether it’s condensation on a blockwork wall in a Bentley Park unit or water ingress in the subfloor of an older timber home in Manoora.
Our work is focused on the science of mould remediation. We understand that common species found in the region, like Aspergillus and Penicillium, require different containment strategies. Our goal is to solve the underlying structural or ventilation problem to prevent the inevitable return of growth.
Beyond Surface Cleaning:
Addressing the Root Cause of Mould
Simply spraying a mouldy patch on the ceiling is not a solution. Our approach is based on the principles of building science and microbiology to identify and correct the conditions allowing mould to thrive.
Mould & Moisture Diagnostics
An inspection starts with mapping moisture. We use thermal imaging cameras and non-invasive moisture meters to find temperature anomalies and hidden water saturation inside wall cavities and behind cabinets, areas where mould growth often begins unnoticed.
Book InspectionAir & Surface Testing
When necessary, we can take air and surface samples to identify the type and concentration of mould spores. This data helps inform the remediation plan, especially for occupants with respiratory sensitivities or in post-flood scenarios where contamination may be severe.
View ServiceWater Damage & Structural Drying
Following a leak or storm water entry, our focus is on rapid drying of affected materials like drywall and timber frames. We deploy commercial-grade air movers and dehumidifiers to bring the materials back to a dry standard, a critical step before any rebuilding occurs. This is the only way to prevent secondary mould blooms.
View ServiceHVAC & Air Conditioner Decontamination
Air conditioning systems are a common source of mould spore circulation. We offer specific services to clean and decontaminate coils, filters, and ducting to ensure your cooling system isn't contributing to poor indoor air quality.

Post-Rainfall Mould in a Parramatta Park Queenslander
Situation
The owner of a high-set 1950s Queenslander in Parramatta Park reported a strong musty odour and visible black mould on the interior walls of a downstairs bedroom two weeks after a significant rainfall event.
Investigation
Our technician used a FLIR thermal camera to reveal a cold spot spreading from the base of the wall. Moisture readings confirmed elevated water content in the concrete blockwork. The source was traced to a blocked downpipe on the exterior, which caused overflow to pool against the foundation and seep through the porous blocks.
Resolution
After repairing the guttering, we established containment, removed the affected plasterboard, and implemented a structural drying plan with dehumidifiers over 72 hours. The blockwork was cleaned and sealed before new plasterboard was installed. Post-remediation air samples confirmed the space was returned to normal fungal ecology.
What Our Clients Say
"After the Jasper floods, our rental property in Machans Beach had a terrible mould problem that the bond cleaners couldn't fix. The team from Mould Experts Cairns came in and immediately identified water trapped in the wall frames from the flooding. Their report was so detailed it made dealing with the insurance company straightforward. They understood exactly what the floods did to properties in our area."

"My son was having respiratory issues and we traced it to the air-con in our Manoora apartment. The technicians didn't just clean the unit; they showed me on their camera how mould was growing deep in the coil and ducting because of the constant humidity. They dismantled and cleaned the whole system. The difference in air quality was noticeable within a day."

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if I have a serious mould problem?
Visible growth and musty odours are clear indicators. If you have unexplained respiratory symptoms, or if your property has suffered a recent water leak, an inspection is a wise precaution.
Will the mould come back?
Mould will return if the underlying moisture problem isn’t fixed. Our process is designed to identify and correct the source of the water, which is the key to a long-term solution. We provide specific recommendations on ventilation, drainage, or repairs needed to prevent recurrence.
Do you service commercial properties and strata buildings?
Yes. We provide remediation and inspection services for offices, retail spaces, and strata-managed properties across the Cairns region, from the CBD to the Northern Beaches.

"We started noticing a strong musty smell after the last wet season in our Whitfield home, but we couldn’t figure out where it was coming from. The team from Mould Experts Cairns used moisture meters and thermal cameras to track it back to a slow leak behind the bathroom wall that had been feeding mould for months. They explained everything clearly and removed the mould safely without spreading it through the house. It was a huge relief knowing the problem was actually fixed properly."
